CHET

Through Protege Ltd, Andrew is engaged by the Coleridge Habitat Enhancement Trust (CHET) as coordinator. CHET was established as part of the resource consent process that the Electricity Corp New Zealand (ECNZ) undertook in 1995 to re-consent the Coleridge Hydro Electric Power Scheme (HEPS) for private ownership and operation by Trustpower Ltd.

CHET has been operating since 1998. Restructuring within Trustpower in 2022 means the Coleridge HEPS is now run by Manawa Energy Limited.

CHET is made up of representatives from Selwyn District Council, Manawa Energy, Department of Conservation, Forest & Bird and Fish & Game plus a Ngai Tahu representative and is assisted by a Trust Secretary in addition to the Project Coordinator, its primary purpose is to “create, enhance and/or maintain habitat for freshwater flora and fauna” within the Lake Coleridge area.

Environmental Project Work

Weed Control to benefit key habitat areas within the Upper Rakaia/Wilberforce River catchments.
Protection of vulnerable species (Wrybill Plovers, Black-fronted Terns, Banded Dotterel, and Crested Grebes).
Pest eradication (feral cats, deer, pigs, possums, stoats, weasels and rats).
Protection of amenity and recreational areas.

Andrew's key tasks involve coordinating and managing funding, stakeholder awareness, communication & strategy and implementation of environmental projects.

Recreational Values

Andrew and Victoria are keen ski-tourers, trampers and hunters; most spare time is spent outdoors enjoying, protecting and enhancing conservation and recreation areas.
